Introducing: Prince Roger Nelson

Prince Roger's Nelson was a iconic musician and songwriter of more then one decade. Born June 7th, 1958, Prince was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was raised by two musicians and was put into music at a young age. He became the worlds most played artist, knowing many instruments you can guess. One thing many never knew is that, Prince wanted a different name. He wanted to go by the name of Skipper. In an interview he states to reasoning to keeping his name. "Prince is the name that my mother gave me at birth" Prince wrote. Warner Bro's ended up trademarketing and used it as a main marketing tool to promote all of the music he wrote.
The Beginning of Prince's Career
Prince was already talented in many ways. He knew how to play many instruments and was very good at songwriting. Prince was a jack of all trades. He knew 27 instruments and played them all. Prince's career officially started in 1975, when he started recording songs for a band called 94 east. Moving on to next year, in 1976, Prince made a demo tape with producer Chris Moon. Unable to secure a recording contract, Chris Moon wasn't going to let Prince's voice not get heard. Owen Husney ended up signing Prince to Warner Bro's later on. The company decided to give Prince creative control of three albums and his first album For You came out in 1978.

Prince Becomes Viral
1980's came around and Prince's career skyrocketed. His album 1999 came out in 1982 and it launched him to the top of the charts. He ended up beocming MTV's biggest icon. His Purple Rain album not only became a hit, it also was turned into a film. Not only that, Prince crushed the bland masculine stereotype. He brought a new wave of feminine and masculine energy in one. Prince proved that a guy could be uber-dandyish, androgynous, sexual and gender fluid, yet with raw carnal appeal.

The Problems Prince Faced in The Industry
Did you know that Prince's music almost got banned? Prince released his album Love Sexy in 1988. It was said that the album was too sexy and was taken off shelf due to the photograph on the cover. Not only that, Prince exposed Warner Bro's for exploiting his talent. Warner wouldn't let Prince leave due to his contract and wouldn't even give him his rights to his music. So, Prince re-recorded all his hits glued to Warner Bro's to get them back in his hands. Not only that, he went to many events with the word "slave" on his face as a protest against the abusive slave like treatment in the industry. He was accusing Warner for treating him like a slave. He stated on Rolling Stone" If I can't do what I want to do, what am I? When you stop a man from dreaming, he becomes a slave. That's where I was. I don't own Prince's music. If you don't own your masters, your masters own you". When youtube and streaming services came out, he kept his music on CD's. Refusing to put them online. Mainly because, he felt if they aren't gonna pay him, they don't deserve his creation.

Prince's Symbol
This is a sacred symbol created by Prince himself. In 1993, Prince announced he is no longer going by the name Prince but by a symbol he created. The symbol was a mash-up of woman and Man. The symbol was created to actually anger his record label for exploiting his creations and treating him like a slave. It was an irritation tactic used against Warner. In the year 2000, it finally worked. Warner released Prince and Prince changed his name back.
